The Campaign for Environmentally Responsible Tourism (C.E.R.T.) was founded in 1994 with the aim to develop a sustainable future for holiday destinations and the travel industry. The unique nature of C.E.R.T. is that it involves the traveller, the travel industry and conservationists in the achievement of its aims. As members of C.E.R.T. we do everything to minimise your impact on the environment and local people. As such, we always keep groups small - 15 to 20 people on average, depending on the destination. Participants are encouraged to enter into the spirit of adventure, but to do so with respect for the places and peoples we visit. Our commitment extends to helping the local communities we visit. We employ local guides, porters, and other essential support staff, and also donate $20US per participant to a community project local to the challenge destination. This could be anything from funding an orphanage in Thailand, to supplying a Cuban children's hospital with vital medical supplies.
Welcome to the world's biggest industry... By the year 2010 it is forecast that more than 1 billion people will take an overseas holiday - and you are one of them. The impact of tourism has already been immense and it will increase. The travel industry brings many benefits: injection of cash into local communities, employment for local people, preservation of native habitats and indigenous wildlife and cultural exchange. However, without care, tourism can have a negative impact through: destruction of natural habitats, diversion of scarce resources, disturbance of wildlife and a violation of tribal people's rights.
